Afghan Women's Project

The Book

Welcome to Gathering Strength: Conversations with Afghan Women. Although the interviews throughout this book were separated by space and time, I invite you to imagine being a fly on the wall during intimate conversations with these compelling Afghan women.

As I’ve been giving my presentations around the country I’ve been struck by several things:

  1. The Afghan women and I have a lot more to say than what can fit into an hour lecture or even several lectures,
  2. A lot of the stories I’ve heard fit into themes where different women can respond and build on the information and stories of other women and can be more powerful when presented that way,
  3. It would be good for questions that I’ve received in the Q&A when I speak to be aired to an even larger audience since those are issues that folks have on their minds,
  4. My own story of creating and then implementing the Afghan Women’s Project can be an inspiration for others seeking to take on their dreams,
  5. My perspective as an experienced traveler who has studied Afghanistan for the past 8 years and interviewed a large cross section of women is useful to anyone trying to get a broader understanding of the situation that people there face.
